Saudi Arabia’s Masam Project Clears 968 Landmines in Yemen, Total Surpasses 512,000 Since 2018

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia’s Masam project, a humanitarian initiative dedicated to landmine clearance in Yemen, has announced the successful removal of 968 deadly explosives from various parts of the country in the last week, according to the latest figures released.

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), which oversees the project, confirmed that the cleared explosives included 4 anti-personnel mines, 32 anti-tank mines, 925 unexploded ordnances, and 7 improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Each of these posed a grave threat to civilian lives, particularly to children and vulnerable communities living in mine-affected areas.

During the month of August alone, Masam teams managed to extract 4,735 landmines and explosive remnants of war, reflecting the scale of their continuous efforts across Yemen’s most heavily contaminated regions.

Since its launch in June 2018, the Masam project has achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully removing over 512,323 landmines and unexploded devices. These deadly remnants, planted indiscriminately by militias in residential areas, roads, schools, and farmland, have long posed an obstacle to the safe return of displaced families and the rebuilding of communities.

The clearance of such mines not only saves lives but also restores a sense of security, enabling residents to reclaim their homes, reopen schools, and resume farming activities without fear of hidden dangers beneath the soil.

KSrelief emphasized that the Masam project is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s broader humanitarian commitment to Yemen, aiming to protect civilians, support stability, and ensure that critical infrastructure and agricultural lands can once again be used safely.

The initiative has been widely recognized as one of the largest and most sustained humanitarian mine-clearance operations in the region, with Saudi Arabia reaffirming its dedication to alleviating the suffering of the Yemeni people and fostering long-term recovery.
